Healthy Choices at the Fair: Your Guide to Fun and Wellness

Summer in Northern Ohio means it’s time for the fair! It’s a season for thrilling rides, amazing exhibits, and, of course, delicious food. Here at the Erie County Health Department, we want you to have a fantastic and healthy experience at all the local fairs. Mark your calendars for a season of fun:

  • Ottawa County Fair: July 13-20, 2025
  • Erie County Fair: August 4-10, 2025
  • Huron County Fair: August 11-16, 2025
  • Lorain County Fair: August 17-24, 2025
  • Sandusky County Fair: August 18-24, 2025

Amidst the excitement, it’s easy to let healthy habits slide. But with a little planning, you can enjoy all the fair has to offer without sacrificing your well-being.

Smart Bites and Fair Delights

Navigating the tempting array of food stalls is a big part of the fair experience. While indulging in a special treat is part of the fun, making mindful choices can make a big difference. Consider sharing larger items with friends or family to get a taste without overdoing it. Staying hydrated is also key, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when it’s hot.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t arrive at the fair starving. Have a light, healthy snack before you go to avoid making impulsive, unhealthy food choices.
  • Don’t forget about hand hygiene. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating and after touching animals.
  • Don’t overdo it on sugary drinks. Sodas and juices can lead to a sugar crash. Opt for water most of the time.
  • Don’t skip the sunscreen. A painful sunburn is not a good souvenir.

What to Do:

  • Do walk around and see all the food options before you decide. You might find a healthier choice you’re excited about.
  • Do look for grilled or roasted options instead of fried ones. Think grilled chicken or corn on the cob.
  • Do pack healthy snacks like fruit or nuts if permitted.
  • Do stay hydrated by carrying a water bottle.

Sun and Bug Safety at the Erie County Fair and Beyond

Spending time outdoors at the fair means being mindful of sun exposure and potential insect bites. Protect your skin by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before heading out. Reapply every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming (if applicable). Wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses can also provide extra protection. To prevent insect bites, especially from ticks and mosquitoes, consider using an EPA-approved insect repellent. Be sure to follow the product instructions carefully. Taking these precautions will help you enjoy your time at the Erie County fairgrounds and other outdoor events comfortably and safely.

By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your time at the fair while feeling your best. Have a happy and healthy fair season!
