Local Agencies Partner to Successfully Collect 7 Pounds of Unwanted Medications at Erie
County Fair
AUGUST 13, 2024, SANDUSKY, OH: The Erie County Health Department, in collaboration with the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and Inmar Intelligence, hosted a successful Drug Take Back event at the Erie County Fair on August 10, 2024. The event aimed to provide a safe and convenient way for community members to dispose of unwanted, unused, and expired prescription medications, controlled substances, and non-controlled substances.
Through the combined efforts of the participating organizations, 7 pounds of potentially harmful medications were collected and properly disposed of. The event also served as an opportunity to educate the public about the dangers of improper medication disposal, including the potential for environmental contamination and accidental ingestion.
In a similar event, held in April at the Florence and Groton Township Fire Departments, 15 pounds of medications were collected for disposal.
“We had great conversations with people in the community about medication being dumped in the trash and the damage it can do to the environment,” said Irina Buga, Public Health Educator, Erie County Health Department.
“We are thrilled with the outcome of this Drug Take Back event,” said Peter Schade, Health
Commissioner. “By providing a safe and accessible way to dispose of unwanted medications, we are helping to protect our community.”
Deterra drug disposal bags allow individuals to safely deactivate medications at home before throwing them in the trash. In addition to offering free Deterra bags, the ECHD provides Naloxone, an overdose reversal medication, free to residents and businesses.
ECHD plans to collaborate with Inmar Intelligence and the Sheriff’s Office on future events.
