ECHD Distributes Lifesaving AMBU Bags to Area First Responders and Communities
Sandusky, OH, March 7, 2025 – The Erie County Health Department is proud to announce the
distribution of 1,200 AMBU devices, an upgraded breathing device used in CPR, to first responders
and community organizations throughout Erie County. These devices are essential tools in
emergency medical response, designed to provide immediate care in life-threatening situations.
In 2024, ECHD distributed 600 AMBU bags, also known as bag-valve masks, to area organizations.
These masks provide manual ventilation to patients who are unable to breathe adequately on their
own. They are crucial in cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, suspected overdoses, and other
emergencies where immediate airway management is necessary. Later this year, ECHD plans to
distribute trauma kits, also known as .511 bags, which will include bandages, tourniquets, and other
essential items for controlling bleeding and stabilizing patients during traumatic injuries.
“The availability of these AMBU brand bags throughout our community is a testament to the
dedication of our first responders and the support provided by grant funding,” said Peter T. Schade,
Health Commissioner of the Erie County Health Department. “These tools are indispensable in
emergency situations, allowing for rapid and effective intervention that can save lives. We are
grateful for the opportunity to enhance the preparedness of our communities.”
The distribution of these bags is made possible through generous grant funding, which allows the
Erie County Health Department to provide these life-saving resources at no cost to recipient
organizations. This funding underscores the importance of community partnerships and investment
in public health and safety within Erie, Huron, and Ottawa Counties.
