Erie County Community Health Center Awarded $200,000 Grant to Enhance Maternal Services and Programs

[Sandusky, OH] – March 14, 2024 – The Erie County Health Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Health to bolster maternal services and programs for women and children in Erie County. The grant will be coordinated with the Erie County Community Health Center, the region’s only comprehensive Federally Qualified Health Center.

This grant is part of a larger initiative led by the Ohio Department of Health in partnership with the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, which has allocated $5 million to 19 community- and faith-based organizations across the state to enhance support for pregnant women and newly-parenting families.

The Health Department and The Erie County Community Health Center plan to expand the essential services and resources currently provided to expectant mothers and families with young children. Community Health Workers will not only connect families with vital services, but will offer infant supplies, deliver parenting education and information, and address various needs unique to these families.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will allow us to further support the health and well-being of mothers and infants in Erie County,” said Health Commissioner Pete Schade. “This project will allow us to connect more families to the resources and support they need.”

“This project will help us to bridge gaps in care that many of our families experience,” said Nicole Ziegler, Director of Primary Care and Clinical Services, ECHD. “This grant will enable us to enhance our efforts in providing comprehensive care to expectant mothers and families with young children and will empower families to lead healthier lives.”

Through this grant, the Erie County Health Department and Erie County Community Health Center look forward to making a meaningful difference in the lives of pregnant women and newly-parenting families in Erie County.
