FOOD IS MEDICINE

Food Is Medicine PhotoAs part of the Creating Healthy Communities grant program, the Erie County Health Department’s CHC Coordinator works hand-in-hand with the Food is Medicine Coalition to plan, develop, and implement sustainable Produce Prescription (PRx) programs across Erie County. It is our mission to increase equitable access to nutritionally dense foods for all populations, alleviating the burdens of food insecurity through innovative nutrition models. We envision a county of residents who are food secure.

Members of Food Is Medicine include OHgo, Second Harvest, Chef’s Garden, Family Health Services, OSU Extension SNAP-Ed, Firelands Health, Care & Share, Serving Our Seniors, and the Hancock Street Garden. Over the past two years, the Coalition has been a key community member, assisting with the implementation of a food locker system to connect patients who are food insecure or who have diet-related diseases to fresh produce, recipes, and resources, assisting with the planning of the Sandusky Streets event, and in the development of a PRx program guide and other nutrition resources for physician practices.
